This week, we turn to a discipline many avoid but do need: fasting. True fasting isn’t punishment or performance—it’s about hunger for God. As Jesus said in Matthew 6, "When you fast…", He assumed it would be part of life with God.
Throughout Scripture, fasting marked moments of decision, dependence, and renewal—from Moses on Sinai to Esther before the king, to Jesus in the wilderness. Today, fasting still realigns our desires, clears distractions, and makes space for spiritual attention.
Research even affirms the benefits of fasting—sharpened focus, emotional regulation, and greater self-awareness. But the work is spiritual. As Richard Foster says: “Fasting reveals the things that control us.”
You don’t need to start big. Skip a meal, silence your phone, or take a break from media. The goal isn’t deprivation but restoration—allowing God to fill the space we often fill with lesser things.
