We live in a culture that constantly pulls at us: e.g. emails, deadlines, endless scrolling. It is easy to feel like our attention is always somewhere else. But Jesus points us in a different direction: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…” (Matthew 6:33).
This week’s reflection is about getting honest with where our focus really goes. Flourishing doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from doing what matters. Often, that starts with clearing space and learning what to set down so we can hold on to what’s eternal.
We look at the story of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38–42). Martha was doing everything right but she was overwhelmed. Mary chose presence. She sat with Jesus. And Jesus called that “the better part.” I don't think that this is a story about laziness vs. productivity but it’s a story about what we give our attention to.
In motivational science, we learn that when our attention is scattered (divided attention), we lose clarity and our emotional strength or connection. But when we build in time for what practices that quiet our soul (e.g., contemplation, prayer, mindfulness, Scripture reading, etc), Swe create space for focus and for God.
For this week’s practice: Try a Distraction Fast.
Pause one thing that’s been draining your attention (maybe your phone, social media, or an extra obligation). Use that time for Scripture and silence. Start with Psalm 27. Ask: God, what do You want me to focus on today?
This week is all about presence. Let it be a reset.
