"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move."
— Matthew 17:20
Let us not skip over the scandalous simplicity of what Jesus says here. He doesn’t ask for flawless faith. He doesn’t demand great, dramatic acts of belief. He says: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed…”—one of the tiniest seeds known in the ancient world—you can move mountains.
That should stop us in our tracks. Because it flips the script on everything we often associate with “strong faith.” This isn't about spiritual theatrics or Instagram-worthy moments of belief. This is about gritty, quiet trust that shows up in real life—on hard days, in hospital rooms, at kitchen tables where bills stack up and prayers feel like whispers.
So what kind of faith moves mountains?
It’s not faith in ourselves.
It’s not blind optimism or wishful thinking.
It’s faith that’s grounded in God’s character—in who He is, and in what He has promised.
Think about the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5. For twelve years, she suffered. She spent everything. She was pushed to the margins of her community. But somehow, she believed that Jesus had power and compassion. And that belief—small but determined—pushed her through the crowd. It stretched out her hand. It made her whole.
This is mustard seed faith.
Not loud, not flashy—just trust in motion.
Faith as a spiritual coping mechanism
Trusting God in motion is not just something we believe—it’s something we lean on, draw from, and live out. It gives us resilience the world doesn’t always understand. It enables us to keep moving when everything says we shouldn’t. It reminds us that our strength doesn't have to come from us—it comes from the One who is always strong.
So what’s your mountain?
A chronic illness?
A fractured relationship?
A mental health battle?
Financial pressure?
A quiet sense of despair no one else sees?
The mountain isn’t the problem.
It is the opportunity.
Not for perfect faith—but for mustard seed faith.
Faith that prays.
Faith that steps forward.
Faith that dares to believe that God is still working, even when everything feels stuck.
💬 “Faith that moves mountains is not about how big your belief is. It’s about Who you’re trusting.”
