Episode 17 – Biblical Wisdom for Flourishing
In a culture obsessed with performance, image, and self-promotion, it’s easy to forget that true flourishing begins with love—not the romantic kind celebrated on greeting cards, but the gritty, patient, self-giving love described in Scripture.
“Love is patient, love is kind… it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4–7
This week on Biblical Wisdom for Flourishing, I want to talk about why love is not only a moral virtue but a psychological necessity. Studies in attachment theory and the triangular theory of love consistently show that love—especially in the form of deep, secure relationships—is a powerful buffer against stress, depression, and loneliness. In fact, Harvard’s 85-year Study of Adult Development concluded that the quality of our relationships is the strongest predictor of happiness and health over a lifetime.
But long before psychology affirmed this, Jesus embodied it.
In Luke 23:34, as Jesus hung on the cross, he prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” In that moment, we see the radical shape of divine love—one that heals, forgives, and embraces even enemies. It’s the kind of love that builds bridges and breathes life into barren places.
In the episode, I reflect on how love is central to Christian flourishing—not just as a feeling, but as a calling. As I often say, flourishing is not a solo pursuit; it’s a communal vocation. Love is how we get there.
